Gas Leak Forces Evacuation of Pre-School Center
By Fire Fighter Mark Madsen
February 8, 2010
Shortly after 9am this morning an alarm was received by the Ramsey Police of an odor of gas in and around a day care center on Franklin Turnpike. Ramsey FD was immediately dispatched. Arriving Police under the direction of Sgt. Lyman and Lt Stitz immediately began evacuation procedures to the bank across the street to keep the children warm, and set up a command post as the odor of gas was heavy in the air. Upon arrival of the FD, the gas was turned off and a full investigation was launched as to the cause. Police, Fire and PSE&G worked together to find a minor leak at the gas meter and the situation was brought to a successful conclusion. Daytime manpower shortages also brought an Engine from Allendale and Mahwah. Never missing an opportunity for a Public Education presentation, Ramsey firefighters stayed a bit longer to pass out Fire Prevention materials to the children.
