| A Ramsey resident and recent graduate of Ramsey high school was killed in a plane crash in Afghanistan. Army Cpl. Michael Jankiewicz was on board an Osprey aircraft that crashed. He was 23 years old and dreamed of the Military since he was a young child. Michael was one of three service members killed in the crash.
Michael, serving with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, had just left for his second tour of Afghanistan in March, after having served twice in Iraq. He was a Ranger, a member of the military's elite rapid-strike force that specializes in covert missions.
Michael was brought back to his hometown for hero's welcome on Thursday, April 15th, with a military escort. A huge American flag was displayed across Main Street in his honor using tower 442 and Mahwah tower 2. A wake took place at Van Emburgh/Snieder/Pernice Funeral Home on Darlington Ave. in Ramsey on Saturday and Sunday and a funeral Mass then took place at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at St. Paul's Church on Wyckoff Ave. in Ramsey. Several members of the emergency services as well as many residents attended the service.
Michael was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
The members and families of the Ramsey Fire Department offer's our deepest sympathy to the Jankiewicz family. May Michael Rest in Peace. May GOD Bless all of you. |
