| On August 27, 2006, Lieutenant Howard Carpluk of Engine Company 42 and Probationary Firefighter Michael Reilly of Engine Company 75 lost their lives while responding to a fire at a variety store on Walton Avenue in the Bronx. During the incident, part of the building collapsed, trapping both firefighters in the basement for over an hour. Firefighter Reilly died shortly before he was found, and Lieutenant Carpluk passed away from his injuries the following day. Lieutenant Carpluk was 43 years old and had served with the FDNY for two decades. Firefighter Reilly was 25 years old and a former U.S. Marine before joining the Department. Their dedication and sacrifice continue to be remembered by the FDNY and the community. |
