After a week of members spending every day on the road visiting schools for Fire Prevention week, The RFD responded to their share of calls. On Sunday Oct 11th, The FAST team was dispatched to the scene of a structure fire in Wyckoff at the Boulder Run Shopping center. Tower 442 and Support unit 452 responded with Deputy Chief Carl Held and Captain Randy Sterbinsky. The fire was contained to the cockloft area above the Bagel store. Workers operating on the front of the building were using a welder and sparks got into the cockloft area causing a small fire. Ramsey units were released within one hour.

Early on Tuesday morning, Oct 13th, the FD was dispatched to a truck on fire at the corner of Airmount Ave. and Roandis Court. Units arriving found a pickup truck fully involved with a small brush fire and flames inpinging on a telephone pole. First due Engine (432)'s crew pulled the first line to knock down the main body of fire. Second Due Engine (431)'s crew pulled the second line along with forceble entry tools. The fire was knocked down in a few minutes. Magnesium metal in the cab caused some reaction to the water as it was applied. Flowing a large quantity of water on this eventually cooled it enough to extinguish. units were clear within one hour.

Several automatic alarm calls were answered during the course of the week. The first was October 14th at 50 North Central Ave, just after midnight, the second was at 72 Sauna road at 3:45 P.M., the third was on October 16th at the Tisdale School at 7:45 in the morning.

On Thursday October 15th RFD was dispatched to a 3-car MVA at the corner of Franklin Turnpike and Prospect Street with a reported car smoking. Units arriving on scene found two cars heavily damaged and fluids leaking on the ground. Crews from engine (432) and (431) disconnected the batteries and applied speedy dry. The third vehicle suffered minor rear end damage. One minor injury was reported. Units were clear in an hour.

On Friday October 16th at 11:10 P.M. the FD was dispatched to a reported bedroom fire at 50 Island Park Ave. Units arriving found a burning mattress on the front lawn with some contents in the bedroom including a chair, table and some clothing still smoldering. The homeowner emptied a fire extinguisher as the first arriving Chiefs got on scene. Assistant Chief Jim Dougherty (440) and the Patrolman entered the structure to check for extension and more victims. The fire was extinguished and the smoke removed with crews from Engine 432 and Tower Ladder 441. The fire was contained to the bedroom.
